Happy St Patrick’s Day!

March 17, 2008

Well it’s March 17th and apparently to some, that means it’s time to skip work and get yourself to the nearest Irish pub so you can drink your face off. To be honest I don’t get it, but then I am not Irish.

Across from my office, kitty corner, there is an Irish Pub named Patrick O’Ryan’s. They exist for this day. In fact, all year, their slogan is “only xxx number of practice days until St Patrick’s day!!”

This morning was an especially nice sunny morning (for March 17th). It was about 4 degrees out and so the revellers starting lining up early. For those of you not from Ontario, the bars are allowed to open at 11am.

This is what the front of Patrick O’Ryan’s looked like at 10:59am this morning.

So after drinking all day, it came as no surprise to us that a fight broke out in front of the pub at 4:30 pm. Lot’s of pushing and shoving and yelling. A few good punches, someone hit their head on the ground, a woman got in the middle and in her drunken state, bounced of a car when someone tried to shove her out of the way. It seemed to take forever, but the Police came to calm things down. (the time stamp says 3:30pm, I forgot to reset for daylight savings)

And minutes later, some of the Police left, but EMS arrived to bandage people up.

So, if you are celebrating, enjoy yourself, but be safe. And if some drunken a-hole says something stupid like “What the hell are YOU looking at??” Just walk away.

Me? I got the heck out of the bar district as fast as I could. I’m too old for those shenanigans. I’m wearing green and I had green beans for dinner. That’s about as festive as I’m planning on getting.

Love the GIF. I have a drop o’ Irish blood in me so wore green cords and looked at a bottle of Jameson.

Although I am married to a half Irish bloke I did not wear green today.
I did not frequent any bars.
I did nothing particularly out of my ordinary.
And I am sure glad I was no where near an Irish pub.

All that said it seems important to give Honor to the fact that I met that above mentioned bloke in an Irish Pub in Berkeley, CA some almost 30 yrs ago this September 17. (6 months from now) 😉

While am not a St Paddy’s Day partier, I do appreciate my Guinness. As it turns out, there is a great pizza place not two miles from home which has Guinness on tap. Guinness goes just fine with good pizza, just as it goes fine with Irish food (I do love a steak boxty now and then), good Mexican food, any other good food, breathing, etc. You get my point: Guinness is one of the joys of being here on the planet.

Glad you stayed out of the fray, Syl!
