Canada. Do you know us?

February 20, 2010

Tom Brokaw, in honour of the Olympics in Vancouver, created this piece to help American viewers know their neighbour to the north a little better.   It should be mandatory viewing.  Well worth 6 minutes of your time. There’s even mention of my home, Windsor.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, the video I had embedded here has been removed from YouTube by NBC for copyright reasons.  (thanks Rick for the heads up!)

In it’s place, Rick has offered a link to the slam poet who performed at the opening ceremonies (in the comments), and also, you might want to check out this link. It’s a nice wrap up by CTV about Canada and our pride in the games, and our country.

    Cracking piece, Syl.
I never realised that 90% of the population live so close to the US border !
It also brings back so many memories….
At 35 secs there’s the float plane flying down a river. Did that… along the river heading out to Cartwright on the Labrador coast.
At 40 secs that sure looks like Western Brook Pond, NFLD. Been there… amazing scenery.
Didn’t do the Bird Island Charter at 4:50 because it was too foggy on the day we were planning to go, but did fly over icebergs on the way down the Labrador coast.
    And then there’s the people…..

What a beautiful piece. What a beautiful country you live in. So glad we visited and want to do so again and see more.
    Thanks for sharing this.

NBC, in their infinite stupidity, has caused the pulling of this video from everywhere. Yes, I mean everywhere: it is not even available at NBC as far as I have been able to determine.

Would it not make more sense to at least capitalize on the viral popularity of the video and offer it on their own branded site?

Prime viewing excitement for this video is now, while the world spotlight is on Canada. Once the flame is extinguished and the anticipation begins for the next Games four years from now, the demand will be less than it is now.

Does NBC strike while the iron is hot? Um…no. They hide this hot property instead.

    Arrrgh.

Not wanting to whine without offering something which helps, try this:

It is Shane Koyczan offering in words his portrait of Canada.
